Testors Dull Cote

Post  Legion of Hufferblight on Fri May 11, 2012 6:36 pm

I finally got a can of Tetors Dull Cote. Used it and am amazed how shiny the sealant I was using is. It gives the warjacks I sprayed it on a very realistic look. I will be using this on my personal warjacks from now on. I might use it even on my Hordes, which I liked a little shiny.
I give this product a thumbs up and would suggest to anyone who picks it up. Just be sure to read the instructions and find some uses on line. Youtube works well.
Talk to you all later

I have some dullcote myself and like the results. That being said, to my understanding, Dullcote does little to protect your paint job. When I use dullcote, it is after having previously coated the mini with some gloss varnish first (krylon). The gloss protects the mini, then the dullcote removes the glossy sheen. I just wish the cans were bigger.

I wish they were bigger too. I sprayed it over the sealant i already had on it. It still is sweet.

It is worth noting that I was told by a master level painter (Tom Schedule of MiniVault) that DullCoat can turn yellowish over time, shifting the overall color of the paint job. Surprisingly, he uses Krylon spray matte varnish exclusively.

For what it's worth.

I use Army Painter's Quickshade and then their antishine varnish. It works for me. Smile

I keep hearing different things about minis and how to preserve them. I've been told that gloss varnish protects better than matte, that baking soda snow will slowly react with the atmosphere and ooze will eventually come out, that Krylon will make your minis "sticky," etc... Anything I've ever used I have heard something negative about it seems. What I want to know is, where does all this info come from? Is it just a bunch of old wive's tales? Have there ever been any studies (preferable subject to peer review) that have determined what is actually the "best" way to preserve and protect a mini? I don't think that Consumer Reports will be tackling this issue anytime soon. Perhaps we can get a grant to do our own studies? Very Happy

as far as baking soda snow goes it yellows, BUT, and a big but is that most of my snow miniatures are around smokers. which yellows most things anyways.
But if you mix white paint in with the mix it looks good for a while.
