I'm a big fan of the formula P3 line of paints. I've used a bunch of different paints over the years, and I use P3 almost exclusively now. They sell a sample pack that comes with 6 paints that you will use on almost any cygnar model. It is a good place to start: http://privateerpress.com/content/cygnar-colors

Then you'll need midlund flesh, thmarite black, pig iron, brass balls, and you should be good to go.

You might want to see if you can pick up some badab black. It is a black wash from the GW line. They recently overhauled their paint line, so I'm not sure if they still make it. If not, there will be a similar product available. I like and use the P3 washes, but I wouldn't recommend them to a beginner.

Get some brushes with good tips. I use a #2 for most all of my painting (including eyes). People think they need a small brush to paint small detail, but this just isn't true. You just need a brush with a fine point. You might want to start with a #1 or a #0 brush if you are more comfortable with it.

For assembly, please wash your models first, to remove the release agent. A lot of people skip this crucial step. It makes assembling much, much easier. I prefer to use a superglue gel. Get an x-acto knife and some small files.

If you have the time, I made a series of videos that you may find helpful:

Hope it hepls!

While I agree that the P3 line of paints are great (as was some previous GW paints of years past), one can reasonably get by with the acrylic paints from the local craft/hobby store. When I first started painting minis, I did not have access to many of the standard game company paint lines (this was years before the internet, back when mail order was the only way... man I'm dating myself to even mention this lol). I learned that the paints are water-based acrylics, and found I could substitute with similar paints from the local ceramics shop at the time.

Note that while the acrylics you get from Hobby Lobby, etc. are not as high quality as say P3, you do get a lot of paint for a cheap price. They are usually twice the size of standard game paint bottles and cost half the price. In a pinch, don't be afraid to try these - most of my painting is done with these "inferior" paints, and I get a lot of compliments on my work!

I'll look into the acrylic paints, the only difficulty will be getting the right colors that match.
