Breaking My Behemoth Addiction

Post  Splinter on Wed Jul 25, 2012 2:36 pm

As I try to build lists in my time off from Warmachine, I find myself having a hard time giving up the Behemoth. He is, in my opinion, the best warjack in the game and I love putting my Extremoth on the table. Since he is a character jack, however, I unfortunately can't include him in every single list I make. This makes me very sad Sad

Since this is the case, I've decided to leave the Behemoth out of my lists for awhile so I can learn how to play with some of the other jacks that Khador has to offer. I'm putting this online so that you guys can call me on it if I try to sneak him in somewhere.

I'm having a really hard time giving him up, but I think I will be a better player if I can learn to play without him. I'm already looking forward to getting him back on the table though.

Anyway, do you guys have any models you feel you have overused or become over reliant on? Not asking anyone to give them up, just curious to hear what everyone elses go to guys (or girls) are.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step to getting better, at gaming.
Its easy in any game to fall upon that crutch that gives you that comfort zone, I think we have all done this in one game or another. Leaving that comfort zone is hard because you have to get past the "If I had x model I could do this." It takes time to create tactics that do not involve your x model. Especially when its an extremoth that looks as good as yours.
Comfort zones are easy to slip into. If you keep changing things in your army not only makes you a better player, but it will throw off regular opponents and take them out of their comfort zones. Which in the end makes every one a better player.
I hope to see you at the tourney next month.

Funny, in the 200+ point Khador army I just bought, I have two Behemoths. One is fully painted and looks awesome. The other I have in parts; the guy selling his friend's stuff didn't know what this big bag of parts was, so he gave it to me for free. It turns out it was all the parts for a Behemoth and Karchev! Another Karchev set was also included, so I now have two massive kits that I can't do anything with. I'll probably try to find a local buyer, or just throw them up on eBay and see if I can get anything for them.

In the few games I've played with Khador, I can already tell that the Devastator is going to be an addictive model and probably an auto-include for me. Love the high ARM, love Rain of Death, and absolutely love the look of the model. I have two of them in metal and am thinking about picking up another of the super cool looking plastic kits. I also love the idea of getting all the way across the field and taking absolutely no damage due to its ARM rating. For me the Devastator embodies the essence of Khador design.

Having played numerous times against both jacks, I tend to fear the Devastator more than Behemoth. Rain of Death is nasty and the high armor gives even the debuffing Cryx headaches. Unless Big B has some movement shenanigans to get him in my face, I can pretty much ignore him.

Shawn/Huffer may want those Khador models, possibly our friend big Drew might as well; I'll ask around.

As for crutches, I have 3 pieces I've been playing heavily. Deathjack (particularly in tourney practice - I have a hard time not seeing DJ in my tourney lists), Pistol Wraith, and Gorman. I've opted out of tier list benefits several times now just to include Gorman in my army because I feel his presence will do more than the benefits of the tiers. These 3 are pretty much auto-includes when playing any caster but Terminus.

Sounds like you lucked into a pretty sweet deal! Karchev is really cool. I know if I had the spare parts, I'd try to build an Extreme Karchev to go along with my Extreme Behemoth!

Also, the devastator is awesome, but he scares me when I use him simply because he can go to armor 17 as soon as he attacks, which makes him pretty easy to kill. If you can protect him while he is open though, he is amazing!

What I like about it is sort of the same thing that I like with Pistol Wraiths: you are nearly invulnerable until you choose to attack. Which means you nearly always get the first strike, which also means you get to dictate the terms of the engagement. That's awesome.

Hey, don't sweat that armor 17 thing. Cryx heavies sport that ARM and still get around and have less damage boxes than Khador jacks. Leaving yourself open for 1 turn at 17 ARM and a ton of damage boxes is still not all that vulnerable. And I agree with Dark - dictating the terms of engagement is a huge benefit!

It never hit me that Cryx jacks are armor 17 all the time. I've been spoiled by Khador's armor so much I can't even imagine what it would be like to have armor 17 all the time. I feel like a stiff breeze should blow Cryx jacks over now. Thanks for the perspective!

Cryx jacks also move at 6 instead of 4.
They have 13 DEF instead of 10.
They have 7 MAT instead of 6.

And our Deathjack is ARM18 !!! lol!

I keep my Cryx. Anytime. Smile

And Spriggan is more efficient than Devastator.

SHWTD - true on all counts, though with 1 turn of lower armor I don't see the SPD or MAT making that big of a difference. The DEF on the other hand I'll give you that. While I'm still jealous of Khador's armor and damage grids, I'd rather have my bonus MAT, DEF, and SPD any day.

Methinks DJ is ARM19 actually.

I have no experience with a Spriggan, never even fought against one yet so I have no clue there.

A savvy Khador player could cast Iron Flesh on the Devastator after it has activated. Give it +3 defense and the -1 Spd wouldnt make any difference.
Just an idea.

Iron flesh is warrior models only I believe. Also defense 13 is still pretty low.

And it's way more interesting on Kayazis or other troops...
