So in the tournament the Retribution player added the cover bonus in melee to his guy whilst attacking it through a wreck marker. So my question is what all would grant said cover bonus in melee?

When attacked through an obstacle obstruction (meaning the opponent has obviously Reach), you gain a +2DEF in melee only, no matter the size of the opponent or your mini.

At last check, wreck markers are not considered obstacles either, AFAIK.
